Mindful Pain Management

"I have learned so much about how to move forward with my life."

Pain, emotional and physical, is a fatiguing aspect of life in general. Using the body's own systems to lower and erase pain is a powerful tool that brings us all closer to inner peace and serenity. Thomas Burnham teaches deep breathing and mindful meditative exercises designed for relaxation, balance, and health. These exercises have been used in cardiac rehabilitation, stress reduction, fall prevention, combating arthritis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, combating fibromyalgia, and lowering high blood pressure.

The majority of people breathe thoracically, from the top one-third of their lungs, taking in only one-third the oxygen needed. The chest and shoulders rise with each breath. Thoracic breathing creates upper body tension and an higher center of mass, making this type of breathing more top heavy. Deep breathing fills the lungs from the lowest part first. Breathing in this manner creates a downward internal pressure which helps lower the body’s center of mass. Additional benefits of Mindful Pain Management are:

  • Increased oxygen and blood flow, which energizes and detoxifies the body,
  • Quiets the mind,
  • Stretches the soft tissue, giving flexibility and relief to physical joint pain,
  • Decreases emotional and physical pain.

Thomas Burnham is a student of Tai Chi Chuan through Master Paul Olivas of Riverside California and Sifu Brian Lewis of Murfreesboro, TN. He has modified this ancient art for maximum benefit of pain reduction and well being. He has been teaching in various venues since 2003, and teaches private lessons.

Meditation can be a part of whole person care.
