The length of treatment with Suboxone may be as short as a few weeks for medically supervised withdrawal (short-term detoxification) or as long as a year or longer for maintenance therapy.
Short-term treatment may be an effective option for some people, others may need more time to address the psychological and behavioral components of their disease. Since physical dependence is only a part of opioid addiction, the chance of relapse can be higher with short-term treatment because patients have not yet learned the skills necessary to live an opioid- free lifestyle. If short-term treatment is the choice, the best method is one that is slow, easy and comfortable for the individual. This slow taper will be at a rate that both the physician and the patient consider to be acceptable until such time as the patient feels ready to discontinue the Suboxone altogether.
Your treatment team can help you set realistic goals. This will provide you with a higher likelihood of treatment success. Any mild withdrawal symptoms that present after Suboxone has been discontinued can be treated with non-narcotic or over the counter medications.
Recovery from opioid addiction can be a long term process. Individuals may require multiple episodes of prolonged treatment to achieve long term abstinence and fully restored functioning. Relapse can happen because of the presence of both physical and emotional triggers in the patient´s life. Your treatment team will help you understand those triggers and create strategies to avoid and manage them.
