What are the signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse?

Identifying a drinking problems involves looking at a person's lifestyle and patterns of behavior. There is a self-reporting test called the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) that screens for both at-risk drinking (heavy drinking alone) and alcohol abuse and dependence (heavy drinking that interferes with life or causes significant distress).

AUDIT is a screening test, and positive results suggest that assessment by a health professional is needed. The AUDIT test is available on our Is there a Drinking Problem page under the menu option Resources.

The test was developed by the World Health Organization. [Top]
